Five Ways to Fight AIDS

The last 12 months have seen many shocking major disasters ... the earthquakes in Pakistan and India; and Hurricanes Dennis, Katrina, Rita, Stan, and Wilma.
Moreover, soon we will mark the first anniversary of one of the worst natural disasters of all time — the Asian tsunami.

However, there is a disaster far bigger in scope than all those listed above, combined ... and this one hasn't had its share of headlines. That disaster is the HIV/AIDS crisis.

This pandemic deserves our attention. Last year 3.1 million people died of HIV/AIDS and the disease creates 6,000 orphans every single day. That's 6,000 children who have lost someone close and will struggle to access food, education, medical care, and love.

December 1 was World AIDS Day — a special opportunity to reflect on and take action to fight the disease. Is AIDS simply too big of a problem for the human race to handle? We don't think so.

People everywhere are learning that they can make a difference. Students are taking the AIDS fight into campuses across the country. Churches are getting involved; one not only has transformed an AIDS-affected community in Malawi, it's also transformed itself in the process.

Each of us can do something very specific to fight this pandemic. Here are five ideas to consider:

1. Pray
God is bigger than AIDS and this problem won't be beat without His help. Consider signing up for World Vision's Hope Prayer Chain to join others who are praying.

2. Sponsor
Join 230,000 fellow Americans and sponsor a HopeChild in an AIDS-devastated community. You will fund programs to care for children affected by AIDS.

3. Be an Advocate
Ask President Bush to ensure 10 percent of global AIDS funding is directed to orphans and vulnerable children. They are usually overlooked. Read more …

4. Walk, Run, Bike, or Swim …
Join Team World Vision and take 6,000 steps for the 6,000 children orphaned by AIDS every day.

5. Spread the Word
Ask a friend to join you in the fight against AIDS.
