Seattle, WA, February 9, 2011--Families in World Vision’s program areas in Rwanda have benefited from the 3 billionth liter of clean drinking water in the developing world, thanks to Procter & Gamble (P&G) which marked the milestone of its Children’s Safe Drinking Water (CSDW) Program.

“No other humanitarian intervention has a more dramatic effect on children and families than access to clean water and sanitation,” said Keith Kall, senior director of global corporate Partnerships for World Vision. “We are deeply grateful for P&G’s innovative partnership, which has significantly supported the life-saving work we do in countries like Rwanda.”

Recently, World Vision and P&G brought PUR packets to remote villages in southern Rwanda. In the village of Mirama, Claudine and Simon Ngendahimana, a family of subsistence farmers, were among those who received the PUR packets that marked the 3 billionth liter milestone.

“Prior to receiving PUR packets, Claudine and Simon had to gather their water from a nearby muddy river,” Kall said. “Unclean water is a cause of frequent infections for this couple, causing a lot of suffering and sending their family to the health clinic nearly every month. P&G’s vision and commitment to this issue has helped parents in the developing world like Claudine and Simon provide a safer and healthier life for themselves and their children.”

World Vision has partnered with P&G around the world, including in Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, Cambodia, Kenya and Haiti. Most recently, in response to the 2010 Pakistan flood, P&G provided 1.1 million PUR packets which World Vision distributed in the most severely affected flood regions.

More than 2.7 billion people live without access to safe water. World Vision is a global leader in meeting water and sanitation needs in developing communities. The humanitarian organization responds to urgent water needs through P&G PUR packets and also digs wells and boreholes to sustain communities long term.

World Vision is a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families, and their communities worldwide reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice. For more information, visit www.worldvision.org
