“Girl Rising” is rapidly becoming one of the hottest “cause” documentaries in years, and it’s not even finished yet. In recent days there have been three high-profile events at the Sundance Film Festival here tied to the film, which is about the importance of education for girls in places like Egypt and India. At least eight nonprofit groups, including Unicef, have committed to help promote the movie to members.

The story of Ruksana, an 11-year-old living on the streets of Kolkata, is one of nine that features in “Girl Rising,” a film about the struggles that girls around the world face to get an education. The film, released on International Women’s Day, is narrated by A-list Hollywood stars, including Oscar winners Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep and Liam Neeson. World Vision, a Christian charity, works with Ruksana’s family and provides the children with school supplies, extra tutoring and a meal every day.

Dreaming of more than a wedding
    March 8, 2013

At the time when girls should be deciding on where to go to university, most girls in my country are deciding on a wedding dress. I am 16-years-old and where I come from in Bangladesh, many girls my age grow quickly from children to adults because they are forced into marriage. How can we put a stop to this injustice? Building awareness through films like "Girl Rising" that pressure governments to implement laws against child marriage and educating communities like World Vision does in Bangladesh. I am a part of World Vision's child forum and just this year we have used our voices to stop three child marriages in our community. Those girls are still in school.

"Educate girls, change the world." That's the simple and powerful mission of the new documentary film and social action campaign Girl Rising, which was unveiled with a sneak peek trailer at a special event, "Creating Social Change with Film at the Center," last Monday at the Sundance Film Festival. With the film at their disposal, girls-focused nonprofits have a better story to tell. And, more concretely, they will come closer to achieving their fundraising goals. Thanks to the 10X10 Fund for Girls' Education, donations raised from the film will be distributed evenly among the nonprofit partners, including CARE USA, World Vision, Partners in Health, Plan International USA, United Nations Foundation/Girl Up, Pratham USA, Room to Read, and A New Day Cambodia.
