One.org: Join the fight against extreme povertyHealthy at the start, healthy for life

It is no mere coincidence, Harriet believes, that Abraham was born on the day in April 2012 when she and other women farmers had completed their first training session in the art of planting orange-flesh sweet potatoes and a new variety of beans. They are crops rich in micronutrients essential for the health of women and their children: Vitamin A in the sweet potatoes and iron in the beans. The crops — particularly beneficial during the 1,000 Days period between when a woman becomes pregnant and the second birthday of the child — were developed by an organization called HarvestPlus, pioneers in biofortifying staple foods with higher levels of micronutrients, and deployed by the humanitarian agency, World Vision.

The public is invited to come and see what has been going on for the past two decades.

The Daily Beast: Read This, Skip ThatReport: Sponsorship improves children's lives
May 11, 2013
The sponsored children stayed in school longer, were more likely to have elite jobs, and more likely to become leaders in their communities. In Uganda, sponsored kids were almost half as likely to finish a secondary education and 83 percent more likely to graduate from university. The model of giving has often been accused of favoring certain children over others, and some child sponsorship charities—such as World Vision, which declined to take part in the study—have shifted towards a community-based approach in recent years.

May 7, 2013
In honor of Mother's Day coming up on May 12, we asked bloggers to share their thoughts on motherhood - and the importance of caring for children who have experienced the loss of a parent. Leading up to Mother's Day, we will feature four different bloggers to remind us to appreciate mothers and care for those who are hurting. Today's first post comes from Jessica Turner. I was in Honduras in January, and I saw a beautiful expression of the kingdom of God. A community ravaged by poverty, domestic abuse, alcoholism, and youth gangs had become a place where husbands loved their wives and children, taught the Bible to other families, and shared what they learned in World Vision health and agriculture programs. The churches were full. The change in this community was remarkable.

Over the past few years, I have had the opportunity to meet and speak personally to thousands of individuals as I have traveled around the world on behalf of the world's poorest people. Many of them have come up to me to tell me a bit about their own lives and how they have sought to put their own faith into action. There is a powerful common thread of longing that I hear from them -- a yearning for a deeper sense of purpose and significance in their walks with the Lord.

April, 2013
My tears led me to become a writer—a challenging and gratifying way of living, one that shapes and instructs me along the way. My tears led me to run the Chicago Marathon with Team World Vision, even though I'd never run more than three miles in my life, and that journey positively rearranged me, inside and out. My life experience tells me that we must pay attention to our tears.
