Using the Giving Toolbox with your family can:
- Make get-togethers even more meaningful by providing a rewarding way to make a difference together
- Spark a fun holiday tradition or seasonal activity — Christmas, Easter, summer break, or reunions
- Teach your children or grandchildren the value of generosity
- Involve your family with real-world issues by learning about poverty and how you can respond together
- Turn your charitable giving into an exciting and eye-opening experience
Plus, your family will receive a certificate as a remembrance of what you've done to help children in need.
We'll provide you with everything you need for a fun, easy experience. Your toolbox includes:
- A DVD with inspirational videos — experience other cultures, learn how the Gift Catalog has changed lives around the world, see how others have used the Giving Toolbox, and inspire your family to action
- A poster to mount on your fridge or family bulletin board (personalize it with your family's goal!)
- A PowerPoint presentation to share your goal with others (church, school, clubs, etc.) — use as-is after personalizing with your family's goal, or use as a template to share your own message
- Customizable flyer to spread the news to others — choose a photo from our collection and create your own unique announcement
Choose from this list, or come up with your own ideas!
- Set a family goal and pick out items from the catalog to donate together.
- Select Gift Catalog items to give in each other's honor for birthdays or special occasions.
- Create an online fundraising page to honor a special family occasion, then e-mail an invitation to family and friends to donate rather than buying gifts.
- Eat one low-cost dinner a week and put the amount you saved toward Gift Catalog items.
- Watch a movie at home instead of going out, and keep the amount you saved on tickets and snacks for a Gift Catalog item.
- Save part of allowances or do extra chores to raise money — babysitting, mowing lawns, shoveling snow, walking dogs, etc.
- Buy small purchases with cash and keep the change for Gift Catalog items.
- Write a letter to friends and family letting them know how they can join you to provide help for families in need.
Keep the momentum going by reviewing your progress together regularly. You might even want to decorate a box or other container to store your Gift Catalog savings.
"When our triplets had their first birthday party and our living room was filled from top to bottom with gifts from their friends, we decided that we needed to do something different.
[Now] every year they select a charity or cause to support.
This year for their 8th birthday party they asked their friends to donate money to purchase gifts from your gift catalog instead of receiving presents from their friends. (They did receive gifts from their family.) At the party, guests were asked to vote for which items they would like to purchase.
In the end they selected a goat, a fish pond, a pig, safe water, educational support for a child, and immunizations. Together the girls raised $593. The girls and all their friends learned a valuable lesson about giving to those less fortunate."
