Issaquah Soccer Club

September was Youth Soccer Month and players from the Issaquah Soccer Club’s GU-15 team spent the past two weekends at the Lake Sammamish State Park soccer fields collecting new and gently used soccer balls and cash donations for World Vision's "Get a Kick Out of Sharing" program.

In total, the team collected: 186 soccer balls, 19 pair of cleats, 30 jerseys and $677.00 to be circulate to kids in need worldwide. The cash donations paid for over 70 new soccer balls offered by local retailer Soccer Nation, at their wholesale prices.

The competitive soccer team is comprised of seventeen 14-year-old girls who have played together for the past three years.

While soccer is the main focus, it is not the only ingredient making this such a cohesive group.

Community Service is an integral part for the kids and parents: One parent is tackling the role of Community Service Coordinator, to assist the girls on projects.

The connect to WV began when the team purchased new uniforms last spring and started searching for a place to donate their old uniforms which were too small, but in excellent condition. Some of the players heard of World Vision from the relief work done for the tsunami and Hurricane Katrina victims.

When contacted, Mike Lane, Corporate Relations Officer for World Vision, immediately called back and shared about the “Get a Kick Out of Sharing” program. That literally got the ball rolling and at an ice cream party to celebrate the players making their high school teams, they collectively agreed to move forward on the project. Signs were painted, e-mails sent out to other ISC teams and a jar was placed near the register at Soccer Nation to collect cash donations for soccer balls.

The team plans to visit World Vision’s U.S. headquarters in the near future to deliver the soccer balls and uniforms where they will tour the facility and learn first-hand the positive impact they are making through volunteering.

What next?
They hope to start a "Play It Forward" program in the soccer community and are asking other teams to consider participating in a team community service project or pass the idea on to another team.

The Issaquah Soccer Club is committed to serving the youth of Issaquah and Sammamish by fostering a love of soccer and an appreciation for the importance of sportsmanship. Run by volunteers, it is one of the largest soccer clubs in Washington State. The club is comprised of 3200 players and over 600 volunteers including the coaches, board members and team managers.
