Devastation in the Pacific

Japan and Pacific nations reeling after earthquake and tsunami

More than ten thousand are feared dead and almost half a million are homeless after the earthquake, now upgraded to 9.0 magnitude, and twenty-three foot tsunami, struck the east coast of Japan on March 11, 2011.

Staff from World Vision US are on the ground in Sendai, Japan mobilizing relief efforts which will focus on immediate provision of food, water, medical care and housing for the homeless. Among the immediate needs that will also be addressed is the establishment of Child-Friendly Spaces--sites for children affected by disasters to experience structure and security that are often lost following emergency situations. U.S. churches are asked to respond to the disaster in the Pacific by taking an offering this weekend to provide needed relief and recovery support to affected areas in Japan and to join with Christians around the world to pray for all of those impacted by this tragedy.

CHURCH RESPONSE URGENTLY NEEDED

The initial target for World Vision is to help 300,000 of those living in the hardest-hit areas, a fraction of the estimated 20 million people who have been affected by the disaster.

World Vision’s relief team in Pakistan estimates it will need at least $20 million in funds in order to respond to the most critical needs on the ground, including providing clean water, food, emergency supplies (like shelter, bedding, clothing, hygiene kits and cooking utensils), healthcare and sanitation.

World Vision has already delivered food and water to more than 21,000 people in Charsada and Nowshera. Over the next three months, the aim is to provide aid (including water purification packets, hygiene kits, tents, cooking items, and food) to 300,000. We have also opened five emergency health clinics, treating more than 2,500 people suffering from waterborne diseases and other illnesses. In addition, World Vision hopes to provide cash-for-work activities to 1,000 people, open seven health posts, and set up 20 Child-Friendly Spaces and 20 Women-Friendly Spaces to provide a safe and comfortable environment for children and women to interact with peers and receive support. Chile Earthquake

March 1, 2010: World Vision begins relief efforts; transport, communications remain key challenges

SANTIAGO, Chile — World Vision began distributing hundreds of blankets and some water containers to Santiago's earthquake survivors over the weekend as it prepared to start an extensive response in the hardest hit areas south of the capital. Many of the communities where the aid group already works — including Lota City, Temuco, Concepcion and other areas in the Bio Bio region and the La Araucania region — were close to the devastating quake's epicenter. Earthquake destruction in Chile
World Vision is rushing emergency supplies to survivors of the 8.8 magnitude earthquake that rocked Chile overnight. We are preparing an airlift of relief supplies, which will be distributed where most needed in areas where we work in Chile. Staff on the ground are mobilizing to distribute emergency survival kits including clean water, blankets and tents to meet the immediate, basic needs of children and families. Please join us in prayer for these children and families in our 6 Area Development Programs in the quake zone and our 100 plus staff on the ground in Chile.

"It happened in the middle of the night. Everyone was sleeping, and there was no time to escape. Many houses are destroyed; even large buildings have collapsed," said Mariela Chavarriga, Emergency Advisor with World Vision in Chile.

We have worked in Chile for 30 years and have more than 100 staff in the country, many living and working in areas close to the quake epicenter. We are also preparing to deploy additional staff to assist in the relief response. For ongoing updates on Chile quake response go to www.worldvisionchurches.org.
