 | Achieve universal primary education
Ensure that each child has the opportunity to go to school. |
The facts:
- More than 115 million children of primary school age do not receive an elementary education.
- Worldwide 774 million adults — nearly 1 in 5 — lack basic literacy skills. More than three-quarters live in only 15 countries.
- Education reduces poverty: Studies show that each year of schooling increases a person's earnings by a worldwide average of about 10 percent.
For many children, education is the only hope to rise above poverty and reach their God-given potential. However, many poor parents cannot pay school fees or buy supplies, communities often lack suitable school buildings and qualified teachers, and families may need their children’s help in the fields or family business to survive. World Vision works to provide schools and school tools, and for many impoverished families, projects to help people replace the income that children would otherwise generate.
How World Vision works for basic education for all children
Financial assistance: World Vision helps supply school uniforms and fees, distributes school supplies, and repairs, builds, and furnishes classrooms and schools so children get the education they need to break free from poverty.
Programs for disadvantaged children: World Vision programs are opening doors for children around the world who might otherwise be denied an education. In Armenia, for example, preschool programs for disabled children allow them to socialize in regular classrooms instead of being isolated at home or in an institution.
