Once laws are established, they are put into practice in the form of public policy. Public policy affects our quality of life, and can also influence the quality of life for those in other countries.
Participation by citizens is necessary for public policy to work. Many outside pressures affect the creation of public policy, for better or worse. Pressure comes from citizens' groups, as well as various commercial groups, all defending their interests.
As lawmakers debate the merits and short comings of different polices, it is necessary forcitizens and outside groups to monitor the effects of the public policy in question, so that unjust or prejudicial polices are not set as law.
