Residents paddle through floodwaters on June 13 in Liuzhou, part of southern China's Guangxi province. Hundreds of thousands of people were homeless across the region this week after flooding that has so far killed at least 76, destroyed homes and ruined crops. More heavy rains are forecast for the days ahead. REUTERS/China Daily (CHINA).
Torrential rains across six provinces in southern China have caused at least 76 deaths and forced more than 643,000 people to be evacuated. Thirteen people remain missing.

Monsoon rains between June 6 and June 9 in Guangxi, Guizhou, Hunan, Jiangxi, Fujian and Guangdong provinces triggered flash flooding and massive landslides.

World Vision Emergency Teams Deployed

Two World Vision Humanitarian and Emergency Affairs assessment teams in China are headed this week to severely impacted Guangxi and Hunan provinces.

According to China's Ministry of Civil Affairs, as of June 11, the severe flooding had:
  • affected more than 10.5 million people;
  • caused 56,000 homes to collapse;
  • damaged 104,000 additional homes; and
  • caused an estimated $44.2 million in economic losses.

In Guangxi alone, 13 deaths were recorded due to the heavy downpours that affected nearly 2 million people across 40 counties in this region. Homes, farmland and infrastructure suffered various levels of damage.

Guangxi's Meteorological Observatory is forecasting heavy rain throughout the province this week. Rain was still pummeling Hunan province Tuesday; it is forecast to continue through Thursday.
