Summary|Ideas for taking action now|Background on ONE Campaign and World Vision's involvement

Summary
When leaders of eight of the world's most powerful nations met together in the G-8 summit in Scotland in July, and then again in the World Summit in New York in September, they strategized some practical ways the lives of 1 billion people living in extreme poverty could be radically different.

The G-8 nations have the power to increase humanitarian aid, reform trade rules, and cancel the debt measures that could free people from extreme poverty.

World Vision is asking Americans to answer God's call to speak out for the poor, feed the hungry and help those in trouble. We have asked the G-8 nations to first consider how their decisions will affect the world's poorest children. If they do the right thing, it would be like bringing the benefits of child sponsorship to millions of children.

Ideas for taking action now

Here's how you can help:

1.Pray. (See more prayer points - pdf)
  • Please pray that Americans will deepen their concern for people suffering from extreme poverty and AIDS.
  • Pray that Americans get involved in the ONE Campaign and speak out for the poor.
  • Pray for the G-8 leaders — pray that they act with compassion and boldness to take historic action for the poor.

2.Start a Bible study on God’s concern for the poor. A good resource for private or group study is the Faith in Action Study Bible, an NIV Bible with study aids, essays and statistics on world poverty.
3.Sponsor a child. You can start making a difference right now
in one child’s life.

Background on ONE Campaign and World Vision's involvement

World Vision is one of the founding members of the ONE Campaign, a national coalition of faith-based and anti-poverty groups.

In the ONE Campaign we call for:

  • Trade Justice: Reform trade rules so poor countries can earn sustainable incomes.
  • Drop the Debt: Cancel 100 percent of the debts owed by the poorest countries.
  • More and Better Aid: Help the poorest people of the world fight poverty, AIDS and hunger at a cost equal to just ONE percent more of the U.S. budget, on a clear timetable.
World Vision recognizes the biblical imperative to fight injustice. God calls us to speak up for the poor, feed the hungry and help those in trouble. We hope that you will join this campaign to speak out about global poverty because around the world:

  • ONE in five people lives on less than ONE dollar a day, many of them children.
  • ONE person in seven does not have access to clean water.
  • Another ONE in seven goes to bed hungry every night.
  • Over ONE hundred million children around the world do not go to grade school.
  • Every two seconds ONE child becomes newly orphaned by the devastating AIDS pandemic.

"We applaud the efforts of President Bush ... but so much more needs to be done, such as changing unjust trade policies. Mr. Bush should earmark just 1 percent more of our nation’s wealth for ‘the least of these.’ As a nation, we can bring hope and healing to an entire generation of children."
- Rich Stearns
President, World Vision

"Global poverty is an issue that rises far above mere politics. It is a moral issue ... a compassion issue, and because Jesus commanded us to help the poor, it is an obedience issue.”
