Pentacostal Assemblies of the World
World Vision in Chicago Joins Apostolic Faith Church for a
"Lesson in Kingdom Building 2006"
By Vanessa F. Church

Since 2003, the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Inc has been committed to making a difference in the lives of African children. Already, members of the PAW have sponsored 2700 children through World Vision at meetings, conventions, and conferences around the country. And they will not stop until they meet their pledged goal of seeing the lives of 5000 children changed through sponsorship. Several PAW members have traveled to Africa on vision trips with Dr. Smith and World Vision to visit sponsored children, assess community need, and to view community project progress.

This past October, World Vision in Chicago participated in Apostolic Faith Church's 11th Annual Faith Works Conference. Dr. Horace E. Smith, MD (Pastor of Apostolic Faith Church and World Vision board member) and his wife, Susan Davenport Smith, hosted the event at Salem Baptist Church’s House of Hope. Based on the theme of “Kingdom Building,” they shared their concern for children around the world with Chicago’s clergy and faith community during each of the three evening sessions. These clergy and members of PAW caught the vision and over 200 children were sponsored during the event.

PAW members not only participated through sponsorship, but through volunteering as well. A team of over 30 volunteers, trained by PAW member Karen Kramer, donned orange shirts to serve at the conference and offer their personal stories of how being a child sponsor has affected their lives as well.

Every day, 6000 children are orphaned by AIDS and another 29,000 die of hunger and hunger-related diseases. The statistics are overwhelming. But, says Bishop Smith, “There is something every church member can do, sponsor a child through World Vision.”
