Paint Workshop Teaches Widow Valuable Skills

Inez Washington is a young Chicago woman recently widowed and left to care for her two sons. After the death of her husband—a member of The Storehouse of World Vision since 1999—Inez was also left with the upkeep of the 4-unit apartment building her husband had cared for.

A painting workshop at The Storehouse came just in time. Inez attended the workshop with her two sons and was able to learn about different tools and techniques involved in home and building renovation.

Now, after The Storehouse’s paint workshop, sponsored and led by Purdy Corporation, upkeep of the apartment building should not be so difficult for Inez and her boys. She and the other 35 attendees each received a supply kit of paintbrushes, rollers, and trays, as well as manuals on painting techniques, all generously donated by Purdy.

In addition to aiding Storehouse members and other workshop attendees, The Storehouse’s workshops provide the business community with an opportunity to get involved with making a difference in the lives of those World Vision works with. The paint workshop was led by Mike Weiss, National Sales Manager for Purdy Corporation. “The dividends a company will receive by doing something like this cannot be measured in dollars and cents. You’re helping people help themselves,” said Weiss. “People really want to improve their personal environment, and if Purdy or I can help do that, it is such a blessing.”

The Storehouse has also sponsored workshops on shower stall and toilet installation, teaching valuable skills and techniques and providing attendees with easy access to materials. The Storehouse hopes to offer more workshops on window installation and weatherization in the fall.

Contact Kimala (Lee) Franklin by email at klee@worldvision.org or by phone at 773.921.3900 ext. 317 about hosting or attending a workshop, and keep an eye on the website for upcoming Storehouse events.

The Storehouse of World Vision, located on the west side of Chicago and in ten other US locations, provides building materials, personal items, and school supplies to children and families in under-resourced communities. To learn more about The Storehouse in Chicago, click here.
