Providing Life's Fundamentals for Children and Families

Think it takes more than a few pencils and notebooks to make a difference in a child’s life? Think again.

Lisa Hartmann teaches at an inner-city school in Minneapolis that is filled with low-income children whose parents often can’t afford things most of us take for granted, such as school supplies. Going without these basic necessities can be disruptive to a child’s learning and damaging to his or her self-esteem.

But Lisa is able to bridge the gap of need for her students through The Storehouse of World Vision.

Offering a Hand Up
Through its community partners, The Storehouse provides struggling children and families with life-changing products that range from clothing and toys to toiletries, household items, and school supplies. These items can lift spirits, boost self-esteem, and ease burdens. Items for daily living are donated by hundreds of U.S. merchants and manufacturers and provided free to partner churches and organizations, which distribute them to those with the greatest need.

The Storehouse worked with 216 World Vision partners in the Twin Cities area to serve more than 198,219 children and their families in fiscal 2005. Our partners often received office supplies and furniture to further their own ministries, while distributing basic items to the children and families they serve on a regular basis.

Tom Mulhere heads People Serving People in Minneapolis, and he uses products from The Storehouse to serve the thousands of homeless and struggling people who come through his doors every year. In a letter to The Storehouse, he wrote:

“We try to have a positive effect on people’s lives, sometimes only for a night, sometimes for a month, and in some cases, we hope their lives are transformed forever. Our commitment and service to families in crisis is unwavering, and cannot be done without your program. The clothing, school supplies, hygiene produces, office, and facility supplies that you offer are fantastic, and our families appreciate them very much.”
