National Day of Prayer: "Let's Take Jesus' Mandate Seriously!"

Christ- followers must begin seeing ourselves as the Church for a hurting world.

May 3, 2007

Prayer is a part of World Vision's projects worldwide, as depicted last year at our Children of War Rehabilitation Center in Gulu, northern Uganda. "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land."

- 2 Chronicles 7:14

May 3 marks the 56th anniversary of the National Day of Prayer. An annual event in the United States, founded in response to God's Old Testament promises in Chronicles, this year's theme is "America Unite in Prayer."

Hope for a Hurting World

As Christians gather to pray in thousands of venues across the U.S., World Vision's Vice President of Church Relations Steve Haas, recently interviewed on Mission Network News, challenges believers to begin seeing ourselves as "the Church for the hurting world, the hope of the world, both here and internationally.

"Jesus said that He loved the world," Hass continues. "And so when we think of church, education, family, government and media (the five centers of power that people will be praying about), we can be praying about the global church, global education, the global family and the plight that they're in internationally (government, media, and so on)."

Pray for Media

Haas also asks Prayer Day participants to not forget to intercede for the media. "So many of the issues that we see at World Vision often go unnoticed by the media. And yet, when media … talk about these little-known areas, people react."

He offers the example of the recent earthquake and tsunami in the Solomon Islands, which because of media attention, garnered an outpouring of desperately needed resources for devastated survivors.

Haas also notes that to pray effectively, we need to be educated about real issues affecting the poor. He recommends World Vision's Speak Out / Advocacy Web site as a portal to understanding the needs of hurting children and families worldwide, how to pray for them, and how to take action on their behalf.

Amazing Hope

In cautioning against hopelessness that would prevent believers from praying for the world's many needs, Hass highlights the equation: "Us with God; nothing is impossible."

As an example of why believers should not grow weary in well-doing, he cites the recent film, "Amazing Grace," the true story of British Parliament Member William Wilberforce, one of the world's most revered slave abolitionists.

Slavery formed 40 percent of of the gross national product in England during the 18th Century, yet because of Wilberforce's partnering with the Clapham sect in urgent prayer and relentless advocacy, he is credited with abolishing its heinous practice.
