On the Thursday evening edition of CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, viewers will have an opportunity to explore World Vision's work on a watershed management system in the mountainous La Gonave region of Haiti. Our project there has focused on controlling downward waterflow from hillsides, reducing flood damage in the aftermath of major storms like the four recent hurricanes that struck within a period of less than a month. Our staff in Haiti report that the watershed project has saved lives.

The news segment will include several interviews: one with World Vision's Samuel Menager, an agronomist who piloted the program; another with Haiti's Minister of Agriculture, who voiced strong support for the project; and additional clips from community members who demonstrate how this effort has helped their village.

By constructing retaining walls on the steep hillsides of this area in Haiti, our staff members — and the community members who helped build the walls — have been able to regulate the watershed and lessen the impact of flooding in this hurricane-prone region.

Viewers can tune in to watch this segment at 5:30 p.m. CST on Thursday.
