Seattle, WA (September 16, 2014) — It’s never been done before, uniting One City behind One Cause for One Week. Beginning today, September 22, Seattle will host a first-ever “Flash Philanthropy” week to raise $500,000 to help the Puget Sound’s own World Vision build a desperately-needed hospital and medical clinic in rural southern Zambia.

“Our neighbors in the Puget Sound region are some of the most generous and considerate people,” said World Vision U.S. President and CEO Richard Stearns. “Families in Zambia are counting on our city to help complete the Zambia Healthcare Project. One City One Cause can accomplish this and save thousands of lives.”

About the Mission & Project

Right now, women must walk miles, while in labor, to deliver their babies in this rural region of Zambia. Sometimes they’re forced to deliver at night, by candlelight as there is no electricity or running water. The infant mortality rate is an astonishing 60 out of 1,000. The average life expectancy is just 49.

“The new clinic and hospital in Hamaundu and Moyo will change all that, improving and saving the lives of tens of thousands in southern Zambia. Both facilities will have a maternity and recovery wing, so mothers and babies can get the care they need. There will also be new diagnostic equipment, staff housing to attract qualified medical personnel and running water and electricity. No more babies delivered in the dark of night,” said Stearns.

When One City One Cause reaches its goal, the hospital and clinic will be painted in Seattle Seahawks green and blue, in honor of the city’s gift to these two Zambian villages.
