 | Monique Mukabakina’s husband was arrested just when she thought her life couldn’t get any worse. Living in postwar Rwanda, Monique and Vincent had been struggling to feed and shelter their seven children. Suddenly a single parent, Monique was faced with a future of despair. Monique and her children survived on a day-to-day basis until World Vision came to her village in 1996. World Vision gave Monique a HarvestPak containing seeds and a hoe and taught her how to cultivate her land. Working with World Vision agronomists, Monique had an excellent harvest and within one year was able to rent more land and increase her income. When Vincent returned home after being found innocent, he was amazed by his wife’s achievements. Not only was she growing food to support the family, Monique had enrolled the children in school, was repairing their dilapidated house, and had become the president of a women’s association. “I used to pray every day in prison that I would be able to rejoin my family,” Vincent says. “God answered my prayers and he used World Vision to care for them in my absence.” |
