Zambia: The impact of HIV/AIDS
- At least 100 Zambians die every day from AIDS
- 21.5 % of the population ages 15-49 is infected with HIV/AIDS
- Life expectancy has decreased dramatically from 45.5 in 1996 to an estimated 35 today
- There are approximately 1.2 million orphans (from all causes), approximately 23% of all children in the country
- Most people in Zambia do not know if they are or are not HIV-infected
- The disease affects mostly the productive age group of people ages 20-49 years
- Peak age of infection in Zambia for women is 20-29 years and 30-39 years for men
- More than 75% of children live below the poverty line
