.
Brutal Facts
  • Approximately 1.2 million Zambian children are orphans, approximately 23% of all
    children in Zambia.
  • By 2010, an estimated 43 million children worldwide will have been orphaned by AIDS.
  • 87,000 Zambian children under age 15 are infected with HIV/AIDS.
  • Approximately half of the 75,000-90,000 street children in Zambia are orphans.
  • More than 50% of Zambian children are chronically malnourished.
  • At least 100 Zambians die every day, on estimate, largely due to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
  • Four schoolteachers die every day, on average.
  • Because of the high death rate of adults, children under 18 comprise more than half the
    total population of Zambia.
  • In Zambia, orphans of AIDS are sometimes taken in by aging grandparents who are barely able to care for them.

And often, entire families of children are trying to make it all alone. They struggle to grow their own food, and often, instead of going to school, work long hours at backbreaking jobs for pennies.
