Timothe & Charles: Every Time We Pray, We Pray for Food
~
by Kari Constanza

Joyce is feeling ill again on a sunny African winter day. The temperature is perfect, neither too hot nor too cold. But Joyce is sweating, her scarf-swathed head shiny with beads of perspiration. At 38, she is plagued by fibroids that keep growing back. “I have fever and pains in my abdomen,” she says.

On a day like today, a day when the pain makes much movement unbearable, she calls on 10-year-old Charles to help.

“When I’m sick, I send Charles out to find things. He brings me Panado (similar to aspirin). He fetches water.” Charles, sitting nearby, nods. “Sometimes when she wants water, I’ll draw a cup for her. Sometimes I sweep inside and outside the house,” he says.
