Joyce is especially worried about Charles. “Charles is small for 10 years,” she says. She knows when her surrogate sons are hungry. “When the boys don’t have food, they stay close to me. When they eat, they go,” she says, gesturing to the dirt paths of the village where children jump over grassy brims and spin rusty bicycle tire rims with tree branches for fun. “They like to play ball and chase each other around,” says Joyce.

But today is not a day for play. “I haven’t eaten today,” Charles says. “I’m feeling bad. Hunger makes me so tired I just sleep on the ground,” he says, pointing to a space in front of the hut. At 10, Charles has the frame of a six-year-old. His legs are thin with whitish-patches of dry skin that stretch over his bony knees.

But lack of food doesn’t keep this blended family from caring for one another. Charles’ new brother, Timothe, loves him very much. “He is my best friend,” says Timothe (age 4), admiration in his gaze. And Charles loves Joyce, his surrogate mother. “She has a very good heart,” he says. Timothe agrees. “She is a caring mom.”
