2.0 MED and HIV/AIDS Integration

A total of 28 Community Care and Education Teams (CETT) with a total membership of 103 loan clients were selected and trained to build the capacity of the CETT to design, own and sustain HIV/AIDS related initiatives in the community. At the end of the training, each group was charged with the task of designing an Action Plan. This plan serves as a guide to help the CETT implement their initiative. Some women groups focused on community sensitazation, others focused on Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission, while some groups focused on Orphan and Vulnerable Child (OVC) Support.

    Training Highlight
One CETT, Tulage' enjawulo, set out to support Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC). The CETT formed part of the Parish OVC Care Coalition Team. The group is taking care of 14 children whom they identified as OVCs within their community.

Another CETT, Kyosiga Women, set out to take care of people infected with HIV/AIDS. They have been involved in basic home nursing care, sensitizing the relatives of the patients on how to take care of the sick and have done extensive referrals. They have even facilitated with transport to enable patients access to the referral centers. After noticing that many people in the cummunity in which the women were operating were ignorant of their sero status, they linked up with a non-govermental organization (NGO) that offers Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) services. The NGO offered this service to the community. Fifty-eight people took the HIV test and those who were HIV postiive were promptly referred for further care and counseling to TASO, a local group specializing in care of people living with AIDS.
