annual report 2000

All organizations incur expenses and invest capital in the course of normal operations. For World Vision, using capital to secure more resources is a primary focus. Fundraising costs are reviewed carefully to ensure the greatest return on our investment. We are committed to the proposition that materials, manpower, and professional help must be used as effectively as possible.

Financial statements vary among charitable organizations because the nature of their work varies. Some organizations gather relief supplies only; other gather and transport supplies; still others gather, transport, and distribute supplies.

World Vision gathers, transports, and distributes relief supplies; conducts field ministry; and educates beneficiaries to develop their own resources -- thus meeting beneficiaries’ needs today and bringing them sustainable change for the future.

Where World Vision’s Resources Originate

Contributions -- Includes funds raised from individual private donors, corporations and foundations, and child sponsors through television, corporate and direct mail appeals, the 30 Hour Famine, Countertop displays, World Vision Today magazine, Artist Associates, and other fundraising programs.

Gifts-In-Kind -- Includes food commodities, pharma-ceuticals, and other goods received through private and corporate donations.

Government Grants -- Cash and food commodity grants primarily from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the United States Department of State.

Other Income -- Consists primarily of annuity and investment revenue.

What World Vision’s Resources Accomplish

Ministry Services -- World Vision United States and other national offices work together in partnership through World Vision International to bring hope and healing to children and their families in 89 countries. Ministry services include:

Child Sponsorship: Seeks to demonstrate the love of God for all people by providing community-based programs that improve children’s lives through health care, nutrition, and opportunities for education. Families, communities, and churches are encouraged to work together to create thriving communities where all children prosper and their dreams for the future are enabled.

Emergency Relief: Responds appropriately to natural and man-made disasters with goods and services that help people get back on their feet and on the road to self-reliance.

Community Development: Child-focused programs seek to overcome the root causes of poverty in a region and provide assistance to recipients without regard to their race, gender, religion, or ethnic background. Staff seeks to strengthen grassroots efforts of people to transform their lives and realize their own vision for a better future through health care and nutrition initiatives; agricultural improvements; Christian witness and spiritual nurture activities; income-generation programs; safe drinking water and sanitation projects; and literacy, leadership, and vocational training.

Domestic Programs: Focuses on needs within the United States, working with churches, volunteers, and community organizations to provide children and youth living in poverty with solid educational foundations, stable family environments, and healthy neighborhoods.

Public Awareness and Education: Promotes awareness of poverty and justice issues through various educational means and by influencing corporate, government, and international policies to protect children and families from exploitation and abuse.

Sponsorship Ministries: Supports activities involved in creating and maintaining the life-changing relationship between the sponsor and child, excluding initial sponsor acquisition efforts.

Grants to Other Ministries: Provides gifts-in-kind and monetary donations to partner ministries that share World Vision’s ethos.

Fund Raising: Efficiently supports this faith-driven ministry through funds raised by producing and airing television programs, promoting the 30 Hour Famine, placing newspaper and magazine advertisements, sending out direct mail appeals to individuals, and airing radio commercials. Leverages resources through partnerships with individuals, churches, corporations, foundations, and the U.S. government.

Management/General: Upholds the highest ethical standards and accountability in providing receipts, performing accounting activities, and planning strategies for effective ministry services.
