Severe conditions — caused by the worst drought in 60 years — are beginning to improve in the Horn of Africa. However, the United Nations has warned that these gains are "fragile" and that famine conditions could return if the traditional August rains are less than expected.

World Vision remains committed to the Horn of Africa, providing day-to-day support for the most vulnerable and implementing long-term health and development programs to help communities endure future droughts.

In July 2011, six regions in Somalia were designated as famine zones. Heavy rains that began last fall led to one of the best harvests in more than 17 years, and the UN has now declared an end to the famine in Somalia. While the change in designation is promising, the level of need in the region remains great.

World Vision has been fighting hunger in the Horn of Africa for many years, and will continue to respond for the long-haul.
