Copyright 2004 World Vision Inc. |  | As World Vision’s regional vice president for Africa, Wilfred Mlay directs operations and oversees the administration and management of all of the organization’s programs within Africa, including some 8,000 staff and a budget of approximately US$500 million. These programs deal with critical issues facing Africa: famine relief, food security, conflict mitigation and reconciliation, child-headed households, HIV/AIDS, orphans, refugee assistance, child soldiers, and micro-enterprise and leadership development.
From 1986 to 1998, Mlay served as director of the International Bible Society in East and Southern Africa, headquartered in Nairobi. He also served as president of the Organization of Social Science Research in Eastern Africa from 1986 to 1993. In addition, Mlay served as vice chair of the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students.
Mlay began his work with World Vision in 1989 as chair of World Vision Tanzania’s advisory council until taking his current position in 1998. Mlay also served as vice chair of the board of World Vision International from 1992 until 1998.
Previously, Mlay was professor of geography and academic dean at the University of Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania.
Mlay earned a bachelor's degree at the University of East Africa in Tanzania and a Ph.D. in population geography at London University. Mlay completed post-doctoral studies in demography at Princeton University.
