Valdir Steuernagel is World Vision’s Representative for Christian Engagement and Spiritual Renewal. In this role, Steuernagel helps World Vision and other Christian groups create organizational environments that reflect a dedication to scripture, spiritual growth and Christ-centered living. In addition, he serves as a global minister-at-large and author.

Steuernagel began his career in 1975 as a staff worker for Alianca Biblica Universitaria do Brasil. Over the next four years, he was promoted to regional secretary and then assistant general secretary for the organization. In 1980, he took his first of two pastoral positions for the Evangelical Church of Lutheran Confession in Brazil. He served until 1983 at the church in Pelotas and from 1988 to 1991 at the church in Canoas.

Steuernagel began his work with World Vision in 1989, joining the organization’s international board of directors. In 1995, he was appointed president of the board of World Vision in Brazil, serving there until 2000. Between 1998 and 2003, he served as chair of World Vision’s international board.

In addition, Steuernagel has held leadership positions in many Christian organizations throughout Latin America, including the Brazilian Congress for Evangelism, International Fellowship of Evangelical Students, the Latin-American Theological Fraternity, and the Center for Mission and Pastoral Studies in Curitiba, Brazil, where he still serves as a teacher.

Steuernagel graduated from the Theological School of Confession in Brazil with a bachelor’s degree in Theology. He holds both masters and doctoral degrees in Theology from the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago, Illinois. He speaks fluent English and Portuguese.
