As a World Vision medical and development specialist, Joe Riverson speaks to professional groups, donors, and the general public on issues affecting the developing world, including water, sanitation and HIV/AIDS. In this role since 2000, Riverson also advises on the development and implementation of World Vision’s trachoma control programs.

Riverson began his work with World Vision in 1984 as national health coordinator in Ghana after serving in various hospitals in Northern Ireland and Ghana.

Between 1986 and 1989, he managed a technical support services department and served one year as associate director of World Vision’s Africa regional technical team. Between 1990 and 1996, he directed World Vision’s programs in Ghana.

The following year, Riverson was appointed West Africa Sub-Regional Resource Development Coordinator, to mobilize resources within World Vision’s global partnership to support its ministry in West Africa. From 1998 to 2000, he served as national director of World Vision’s programs in Liberia.

Riverson holds bachelor’s degrees in medicine, surgery, and obstetrics from Queens University of Belfast in Northern Ireland. He earned postgraduate diplomas in child health from the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians in Glasgow and Dublin. In addition, he was awarded diplomas in tropical medicine and hygiene, and tropical public health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine at the University of London. Riverson also holds a certificate in health administration and management from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration.
