Copyright 2004 World Vision Inc. |  | Dr. Douglas David Shaw serves as World Vision’s HIV/AIDS and health advisor in Cambodia. Based in Phnom Penh since 2001, Shaw provides technical and management support for behavior change approaches, HIV counseling and blood testing, home and community care, capacity building and advocacy for HIV/AIDS and health projects.
Between 1994 and 1996, Shaw practiced family medicine in Australia and England and became a public health registrar in Australia in 1997. In this role he focused on child immunization, communicable diseases, blood-borne viral infections (including HIV), and injury prevention in children.
From 1999 to 2000, after obtaining specialist qualifications in public health medicine, Shaw served as senior medical officer at Toowoomba Hospital in Queensland, Australia involved in the treatment and control of sexually transmitted infections, and drug and alcohol problems.
Dr. Shaw has published several articles on a variety of public health topics including, improving the safety of rental homes, the spread of hepatitis among illicit drug users, and oleander plant poisoning in childhood.
Dr. Shaw holds a master’s degree in tropical health from the University of Queensland and a master of arts degree from Open University in the United Kingdom. He received his medical degree from the University of Queensland in 1980.
Dr Shaw, an Australian, is married to Sally, an English nurse-midwife. They have two boys and have adopted a Cambodian girl whose parents died from HIV/AIDS.
Dr. Shaw has a working knowledge of the French and Khmer languages.
