Fifteen Million People Will Contract HIV This Year

Media Advisory – July 12, 2002
Contact: Elaine Bole (703) 932-7189

  • Health Officials Estimate One in Every 20 Adults in D.C. is HIV Positive
  • National Press Club forum gathers delegates from last week’s International AIDS Conference to discuss what is being done

Last week at the 14th International AIDS Conference in Barcelona, angry protesters drowned out the address of Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson. The activists argue that the Bush administration has not pledged enough money to fight the global pandemic.

This Monday, conference delegates will meet in Washington, DC, to update reporters on the breaking developments in research and care, and the growing number of new high-risk groups. Delegates will also talk about the Bush Administration’s strategy for fighting the disease.

While HIV infection rates have stabilized in the United States, the African-American community remains the hardest-hit. U.S. health experts will discuss what is being done to reduce infection rates.

International AIDS program experts will also explain why gender inequality and AIDS are closely connected, and why Africa is the only continent where the number of women with AIDS outnumbers men.

In AIDS research, medical specialists will discuss whether a vaccine is the only way to end the pandemic. When will it be ready, and will we have to develop a vaccine for multiple strains?
