Clothing to aid displaced Iraqis departs Sewickley World Vision volunteers spend 124 hours sorting and packing SEWICKLEY – World Vision, the international Christian relief organization, will ship nearly 5,500 pieces of clothing to Jordan, for Iraqis displaced from their homes by the conflict. Pittsburgh-area volunteers sorted through nearly 300 large packing boxes of clothes to separate out bright colors; only dark-colored clothing – black and dark blue and dark gray – are accepted by the local culture.. “Our volunteers spent 124 hours sorting and packing,” said Dick Johnson, who established World Vision’s Sewickley facility in 1989. “It took a few more hours because of the colors, but our volunteers were glad to put in the extra effort so that people who already have suffered so much could feel comfortable in their new clothes.” The clothing will be trucked to the Port of Baltimore for the 40-day passage to Jordan. The shipment, valued at approximately $50,000, includes sweatshirts, sweatpants and other clothing for both adults and children. World Vision’s team in Amman, Jordan is preparing to help refugees in Jordan, Syria and other countries that border Iraq. When conditions in Iraq permit, World Vision staff plan to help civilians rebuild their lives.
