March 26, 2003 TRUCK OF RELIEF SUPPLIES HEADS TO SYRIA World Vision will bring supplies to assist refugees fleeing conflict in Iraq HANOVER, Germany -- World Vision today sent emergency relief supplies to refugee camps in Syria, where aid workers will assist those displaced by the conflict in Iraq. The shipment, valued at $80,000, left World Vision’s warehouse in Hanover, Germany today and is scheduled to arrive in Al Hassake close to camps in Syria’s northeast around April 4. The truck contains 20 tons of supplies, including water containers, water purification tablets, hygiene kits, medicines, soap, plastic sheeting, large tents and a health kit designed by the World Health Organization to service the health needs of 10,000 people for three months. “Last week the Syrian government agreed to open its borders and allow refugees in,” said World Vision senior relief coordinator Doris Knoechel. “We’ve had to move quickly to bring in supplies, and this shipment will help a great deal in our preparedness to meet the needs of refugees once they start to enter the country.” To date, few refugees have arrived in Syria, but relief organizations expect many more to arrive as the conflict goes on. In addition to its work in Syria, World Vision is prepared to help refugees in Jordan and other countries bordering Iraq. When conditions permit, World Vision staff plan to help civilians in Iraq rebuild their lives. CONTACTS: mediainfo@worldvision.org | U.S. Media Contacts
