World Vision mounts massive response death toll exceeds 10,000 in Asia

December 26, 2004

SEATTLE World Vision is providing food, blankets and temporary shelter to people in Asia devastated by the worst earthquake in 40 years, as the death toll exceeds 10,000.

“Hundreds of families are searching for children who have likely been swept out to sea,” says Grant Cassidy, a World Vision aid worker helping with the relief efforts in India.

Houses, cars and boats have been swept away, and thousands of families have lost everything and are in a state of shock, Cassidy says

Initial response includes food, emergency shelter, blankets, cooking utensils, mosquito nets and water purification tablets.

World Vision, with more than three decades experience in the region, has responded to similar disasters but this is unprecedented in its scale and scope.

“All of us around the world are deeply saddened by this tragic news in Asia,” says Richard E. Stearns, President of World Vision. “To those grieving over loved ones lost or missing, pleased be assured you are in our thoughts and prayers.”
