Colombia
Colombia has suffered from civil strife for more than three decades. Widespread lawlessness, entrenched rebel groups and a deep-rooted culture of political violence are aggravated by corruption and an inequitable distribution of wealth, land and power. Civilians are the principal victims, with some 4,000 political killings per year and some 1.6 million people displaced by violence thus far - nearly 300,000 in the past year alone. A deep recession mires its economy and nearly 20 percent of its people are unemployed.
