A Message from World Vision U.S. President Richard Stearns
March 20, 2003
World Vision believes in a God of hope -- a hope that sustains us in troubled times when nations are in conflict, when sons and daughters are placed in harm's way.
As a humanitarian organization that exists to help children not just survive, but to reach their God-given potential, World Vision is concerned about Iraq's 13 million children -- half its population and a generation that has known little but hardship and deprivation. Once war came, we began praying it would be brief and that combatants would minimize civilian casualties at all costs.
World Vision is committed to helping Iraqis displaced or otherwise affected by this conflict. The Iraqi people have been impoverished by a regime that has used the country's wealth to build up military power, while the death rate of Iraqi children under age 5 doubled.
World Vision is prepared to help Iraqis fleeing their homeland, and stands ready to help within Iraq as conditions permit - not just to provide food and medicine, but to participate in international efforts to help Iraq rebuild a just and peaceful society where children can grow and thrive.
Finally, World Vision supports all of those affected by the war in prayer: leaders making life and death decisions, all peoples of the Middle East, and finally, of course, the world's children.
We find comfort in Jesus' words: "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid."
