In a tense meeting at the White House on September 16, Irish rock star Bono urged President Bush to boost funding for anti-AIDS programs in Africa. But the U2 front man was disappointed in the president’s response. "We had a good old row," Bono said. In his 2004 budget bill, Bush included $3 billion to battle AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. Congress plans to cut the funding to $2 billion.
At a news conference later that day, Bono said that he would continue to urge the president to seek the $3 billion figure. Bruce Wilkinson, senior vice president for international programs at World Vision, also spoke in support of fully funding the AIDS plan in 2004. "Every 14 seconds, a child loses his or her parents to AIDS in Africa," he said.
