The southern Chinese provinces of Anhui, Guangxi, and Jiangxi have endured a second year of devastating summer floods, which have left hundreds dead, tens of thousands sick and injured, and some 41 million people homeless or otherwise affected.

In the Anhui province alone, one million people were evacuated, 20,000 houses destroyed and more than 1.5 million acres of farmland rendered useless. In addition, water levels have remained so high due to the continued rains that transportation continues to be virtually impossible.

“Most of the flood victims are still living in temporary shelters provided by the government,” said World Vision relief coordinator Victor Kan. “As waters have not receded, boats have become the main mode of transportation in some areas."

World Vision is providing food and shelter to nearly 50,000 people in Anhui, Guangxi, and Jiangxi provinces and will assist them in rehabilitating their communities once the waters have receded.
