While southern Africa’s worst drought in a decade is garnering modest media coverage, some 6 million people in Ethiopia and millions more throughout East Africa are facing severe food shortages. But with negligible international attention, the region, regrettably, is receiving little emergency aid.
“The World Food Program is telling us that 6 million Ethiopians are going to need help from other countries, but so far, few governments and private organizations seem to notice what’s going on,” said Randy Strash, director of World Vision’s emergency response and prevention.
World Vision is conducting five separate feeding programs throughout Ethiopia. In other areas of the country, The organization has helped farming communities develop irrigation systems, access drought-resistant crops and utilize efficient farming techniques. As a result, these communities have become drought-resistant themselves.
