The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) damaged or destroyed more than 30 buildings in the Gaza city of Rafah January 21, including a portion of World Vision’s Rehabilitation Center for the Deaf and Disabled. During the morning hours, Israeli tanks and bulldozers, covered by soldiers in three army towers, tore down the southern wall of one of the center’s buildings, and destroyed 30 nearby homes.

Children who had not heard about the demolition arrived at school to find classes cancelled for the day. World Vision’s staff in the Gaza Strip have yet to receive an explanation from the Israeli military as to the purpose of the demolition.

According to The Jerusalem Post, IDF officers said soldiers in Rafah were instructed to demolish empty structures reportedly used as cover to dig the tunnels or perpetrate attacks.
