Caribbean Nation Shows Signs of Recovery from Political Crisis

Haiti has begun the slow process of recovery from its most recent political crisis, the ouster of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide more than six weeks ago. However, widespread hunger, disease and insecurity continue to threaten the country’s stability.

While most schools have started to open their doors again, the majority of students, and many teachers still fear returning to class. Public exams also are being rescheduled to allow students to finish their school year, interrupted by the political situation.

World Vision is distributing emergency food rations and personal hygiene items to more than 14,000 families in Haiti. The emergency supply kits were purchased with funding from the U.S. Office of Disaster Assistance, and World Vision funding offices in Canada, Taiwan, New Zealand and the United States. In addition, World Vision runs mobile clinics throughout the Central Plateau region, where health statistics are among the worst in Latin America’s poorest country. In the Central Plateau, more than 10 percent of children die before their first birthdays, and another 19 percent die by age five.
