While much of Iraq remains “under construction,” World Vision celebrated the completion of its first school rehabilitation project in the western Iraqi city of Al Rutbah. In just three weeks, local contractors completed the plastering, painting and electrical re-wiring as well as the installation of water tanks, toilets and drinking fountains.
“I cannot believe after all these years of the school wasting away, we finally have an improved facility,” said principal Mfadi Abdellatif Diab. “The children actually will enjoy coming back in the fall!”
“We have so much work left to do,” said Ian Curtis, World Vision’s director in Iraq. “At the same time, it’s wonderful to celebrate the completion of something that is so important to this community’s development.”
In Al Rutbah, World Vision is rehabilitating 11 additional schools and the community health clinic as well as providing awareness programs about landmines and unexploded ordnance. World Vision also is working in Mosul in northern Iraq.
