Staff Cautious as Traumatized Students Return to School Damaged by Israeli Forces

Teachers at World Vision’s Rehabilitation Center for the Deaf and Disabled will welcome their students back to class on Saturday. Students will return two weeks after the Israeli Defense Forces destroyed part of the school. Many students are still traumatized by the event.

On January 21, Israeli tanks and bulldozers damaged or destroyed more than 30 buildings in the city of Rafah, including a portion of the school. Soldiers in three nearby army towers provided cover to the vehicles.

“The children are consistently exposed to fear and danger,” said school director Darwish Abu Sherek. “The little ones have been traumatized by the constant gunfire they hear from the gun towers.”

Students will return to class on February 7, following the Muslim celebration of Eid-ul-Adha. Soldiers continue to fire shots from the nearby towers. As a result, school director Darwish Abu Sherek decided that classes will be held only on the ground floor of the building.
