Liberian transitional government leader Gyude Bryant has promised that the country’s disarmament and demobilization program will begin April 15, after nearly four months of delay.
The disarmament process began December 7, 2003, but was abandoned when the one cantonment site in operation was overwhelmed by former combatants coming forward to hand in their guns. Today, according to UNMIL commander General Daniel Opande sufficient manpower is available to ensure security and supervise the disarmament and demobilization process properly.
Now, according to Bryant, two additional cantonment sites are 90 percent complete and will be ready by 10 April. An estimated 40,000 to 50,000 combatants in Liberia’s 14-year civil war will need training and employment opportunities so they can rejoin Liberian society.
World Vision has worked in Liberia since 1959 and conducts nutrition, health and agricultural programs.
