Thousands of Liberians were displaced from their homes for the second time in a month as violence between government and rebel forces erupted in the capital city of Monrovia June 24 and 25. Many of the displaced had just returned to their homes following a rebel attack on Monrovia June 9.

Government and rebel officials have been conducting peace talks since June 5 and agreed to a cease-fire June 17, allowing many displaced residents to begin returning to their homes.

However, tensions flared again June 20 when President Charles Taylor reneged on a promise to step down from power immediately, rather than at the end of his term in January of 2004.

“We need prayers from our colleagues and supporters,” said Wilfred Mlay, World Vision’s vice president for Africa. “The situation is so serious we could soon be seeking additional emergency supplies to help the displaced.”

World Vision provided food for more than 9,000 people at displacement camps outside of Monrovia and conducted an immunization program that vaccinated more than 700 women against tetanus and nearly 4,000 children under the age of five against measles.
