Security continues to prove elusive despite a tenuous cease-fire between government and rebel forces in war-torn Liberia. As a result, hundreds of thousands of civilians displaced from their homes face starvation in camps outside of the capital of Monrovia.

Reports of rapes, robberies and abductions continue to pour out of areas around Monrovia. In addition, looters have taken vehicles, computers, food and relief items from several aid agencies. Looters unsuccessfully attempted to rob World Vision’s office.

World Vision relief workers report that the continued chaos has slowed assessments of civilians’ needs, and has prevented food distribution in areas outside of Monrovia. More than 100,000 people have been unable to find refuge in the city and are isolated from aid agencies’ reach outside of the city. However, workers continue to provide vaccinations and emergency healthcare to many of the 30,000 people living in Monrovia’s sports-stadium-turned-displacement-camp.

World Vision plans to resume food distribution as soon as security allows.
