Despite fears of a delay, members of both major Liberia rebel organizations, Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (LURD) and the Movement for Democracy in Liberia (MODEL), have agreed to hand over their weapons to the United Nations on Sunday, December 7, as scheduled.

Concerns arose when, on November 27, members of LURD, MODEL and the former government of Liberia walked out of talks on the disarmament process with the U.N., refusing to participate unless their groups were assigned more key positions in the post-war government and business sectors.

“Getting guns out of the hands of combatants is the first step to rebuilding this country,” said Tita Hahn World Vision’s program coordinator in Liberia. “Only when we have peace can we begin to see progress.”

Currently, World Vision is distributing relief items, training midwives in displacement camps and providing supplementary feeding for malnourished children as well as health care and trauma healing.
