Hundreds of people on the remote islands of Tikopia and Anuta are homeless and face hunger after Cyclone Zoe, packing winds of up to 225 miles per hour, slammed into the Solomon Islands on December 29. Waves reached more than 200 yards inland, their salt water destroying the staple crops of cassava, taro and sweet potatoes. At least 70 homes were destroyed by the waves; sago palm leaves needed to rebuild them must be imported from other islands. Remarkably, there have been no reports of deaths.

World Vision was one of the first agencies on the scene, providing food, blankets and water supplies. A large portion of the gravity-fed water supply system on Tikopian was destroyed. World Vision brought in water and water containers for the Islanders to use, while the island’s water system is repaired.
