Parishioners, readers and youth ministers nationwide are mourning the death of pastor, author and youth ministries advocate Mike Yaconelli who died October 30 in a car accident in northern California.

Yaconelli, with his wife Karla, founded Youth Specialties, a San Diego-based ministry designed to equip church youth workers. As part of their work, Youth Specialties and World Vision partnered to develop the “One Life Revolution” project, which engages American students in the fight to stop the rampant spread of AIDS in Zambia.

“Mike was a prophetic voice who, in his own unconventional way, challenged individual Christians and the church in America to examine their faith and relationship with Jesus Christ in an honest and open manner,” said World Vision President Richard E. Stearns.

In addition, Yaconelli founded and edited The Door (formerly The Wittenburg Door) and authored two books, Dangerous Wonder and Messy Spirituality. He was 61.
