World Vision Staff Member Escapes Buchanan, Most of Country Remains in Hostile Hands
World Vision Liberia staff member James Kieh September 13 escaped from the rebel-held port city of Buchanan, some 80 miles south of Monrovia, after enduring 45 days of harassment, intimidation and looting by rebel soldiers. Kieh, his wife and their three children paid $25 each to travel, via fishing canoe, 10 hours on the Atlantic from Buchanan to Monrovia. Read more...

    Bono, Bush Have ‘Good Old Row’ Over AIDS Funding
    In a tense meeting at the White House on September 16, Irish rock star Bono urged President Bush to boost funding for anti-AIDS programs in Africa. But the U2 front man was disappointed in the president’s response. "We had a good old row," Bono said. In his 2004 budget bill, Bush included $3 billion to battle AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.
