Who are the people?
Lebanon is a melting pot of Middle Eastern peoples and a variety of subcultures. Lebanon’s official language is Arabic, but French and English are widely spoken and taught in schools. The population is ethnically diverse because of the region’s long history of conquest and assimilation.

The country’s power is divided among more than 15 ethnic-religious communities, which represent Muslim, Druze, and Christian sects. More than a decade of civil strife strengthened sectarian loyalties at the expense of national unity; consequently, Lebanon became less of a nation and more a collection of feudal-like baronies organized along religious lines.

Many Lebanese people work in industries such as wood and furniture production, mineral and chemical processing, and cement factories. Tourism is also a primary source of national income. But in the poorest communities, employment is scarce and families struggle to provide food, clothing, and education for their children.

Through child sponsorship, World Vision is supplying formal education, medical treatment, nutrition, and spiritual nurture to demonstrate God’s love to the people of Lebanon.

What is it like to live there?
The Republic of Lebanon, a small country located on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea, shares borders with Syria and Israel. There are four seasons that are similar in duration and climate to those found in the United States.

Lebanon’s tumultuous history has long been central to events in the Middle East. Following World War l, the country gained independence and gradually became the commercial and cultural hub of the Arab Middle East. Residents generally coexisted peacefully until 1975, when tensions contributed to the outbreak of a civil war. The country’s very existence was threatened, until a tenuous peace accord was reached in 1990.

The middle class in Lebanon has virtually disappeared, and some areas have been reduced to ruins. More than 1 million people, approximately 28 percent of the population, live in poverty, as do an additional 100,000 Palestinian immigrants and refugees. Many families are in need of basics such as nutritious food, clean water, and education. World Vision sponsors are helping provide families with resources and skills to help them care for their children and improve their quality of life.
